Garland Chief of Police Jeff Bryan said Monday afternoon his department is in the middle of a "very complicated" investigation involving three different locations after a man opened fire multiple times on police officers.

Bryan said the department received multiple 911 calls at about midnight about people hearing gunfire in the area of 1st Street and West Wanda Drive. In one of those calls, Bryan said dispatchers could hear as many as 10 gunshots in the background.

As the officer arrived at the location, Bryan said they were ambushed and didn't have time to exit their cars before they were targeted with gunfire. The officers were able to retreat and escape the barrage, but not before one of the officers was shot through the leg, with the bullet lodging in his other leg.

Lt. Pedro Barineau held a press conference Monday morning about an officer who is in stable condition following an overnight shooting.

"When the officer arrived at the scene, he was immediately met with gunfire," Lt. Pedro Barineau said in a press conference on Monday morning. "That officer was able to retreat to safety, where he was able to get help."

As officers rushed to provide first aid, the gunman drove away in a white pickup truck.

Officers pursued the truck to the next block, where Bryan said the armed man had taken up a concealed position behind parked cars. As the next officer arrived, the man began firing again, and the officer took cover. As backup arrived, the man began shooting toward those officers and they returned fire. The man then ran between houses to another block, where Bryan said the man's family had a home.

The chief said Garland officers learned other people were inside the family's home and worked to help them evacuate safely. Nearly two hours after the initial call about gunshots, Bryan said the man charged out of the house with something in his hand and took a "shooter stance" toward police. Bryan said multiple officers fired simultaneously, fatally wounding the man.

"We're still trying to determine what the object was that he pointed at the officers. But indications are that it was a magazine from one of the guns," Bryan said. "We did recover two firearms nearby that we believe he endangered our officers with that were dry of ammunition."

The chief identified the man killed in the shootout as 24-year-old Bernardo Mares. The chief said they are still trying to confirm Mares's motive for the outbreak of violence and why he targeted police.

"At this time, we do not yet understand what prompted Mr. Mares to engage these shootings in his attempt to kill multiple police officers, but according to witnesses, he indicated that he was not going to jail and he was going to force officers to kill him," Bryan said. "We ask that you please keep the injured officer and Mr. Mares's family in your prayers as they try to make sense of this incident."

Bryan said he spoke with the injured officer at about 2 a.m. and that he was in a lot of pain but was in good spirits. Bryan did not release the officer's name but said he was resilient and had been with the department for about a year. At last check, the officer was listed in stable condition.

"The poise that he showed for a one-year officer, I'm very proud of him," Bryan said. "In fact, I'm proud of all of our officers. You know, this was an incident where multiple gunshots were being fired and these officers charged into that, protecting that neighborhood and protecting other officers, and so I'm proud of each of them."

The chief estimated Mares and officers had fired more than 100 shots but that the total number had not been confirmed. He said the body camera video will be released later after consultation with the Dallas County District Attorney's Office.

According to Garland police, eight officers fired their weapons over the two-hour event, and they have all been placed on routine administrative leave pending the outcome of investigations by the police department and the Dallas County District Attorney's Office. None of the officers have been identified.
