At least 17 injured in chain-reaction motorcycle crash in Fort Worth, police say

Fort Worth Fire responding to a fiery chain-reaction motorcycle crash Friday night.

At least 17 people were injured after a chain-reaction crash involving about 15 motorcycles on Interstate 35W in Fort Worth Friday night, according to police. Officials called the crash a "mass casualty incident."

The crash happened when the lead vehicle's tire blew out, leading to a chain-reaction crash, Fort Worth police believe.

According to fire officials, of the 17 people injured, 14 were transported to local hospitals, with some in critical condition. Three patients were treated at the scene.

The Fort Worth Fire Department said the crash occurred near Interstate 35 by the Chuck E. Cheese in the Presidio shopping center. Crews were dispatched to the incident just before 8:45 p.m., officials said. When they arrived on scene, officials said they saw several motorcycles engulfed in flames and multiple patients scattered around the roadway.

"For the duration of the event, 11 different fire apparatuses and 10 ambulances made the scene," the Fort Worth Fire Department said.

The southbound toll road was shut down for several hours following the crash.
