Thankful for the many opportunities and awards he received, Scruggs created the Dr. Sylvester Wooten Scholarship for fellow Chi Mu chapter members in 2007.
He graduated from the University of North Carolina at Pembroke in 1994 and serves on the board of trustees. The Newy Scruggs Sports Broadcasting Scholarship was established in 2003 for students who desire careers in the sports media.
Born in Wiesbaden, Germany, the Newdawg is an army kid.Â
